Simply explained VoIP is the ability to transmit and receive voice traffic / data over an IP network and most quality ADSL (Broadband) connections*.

A key technology in the convergence of voice and data is the SIP trunk, a 21st century version of an external line, delivered by a quality ADSL service or equivalent.

In simple terms this is the ability to provide digital IP lines (SIP Trunks) onto an IP PBX that are not local (BT) network dependent. In other words numbers are no longer fixed to local telephone exchanges or geographic areas as they use Broadband (or similar service) for delivery.

*To ensure quality of speech it is recommended that business level of broadband is used (low contention ratio) and for public access (transferring external calls (customers) across the network, ADSL is required with QOS (Quality of Service). This is more expensive then normal broadband but up to 4 simultaneous calls can be guaranteed and should really be used just for voice with a separate connection for normal data/web use.

DEFINITION: VoIP “Voice over Internet Protocol”, also called IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.

DEFINITION: SIP "Session Initiation Protocol” is an application-layer control (signaling) protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants. These sessions include Internet telephone calls, multimedia distribution, and multimedia conferences. A 21st century line!
